Do you need to replace your Furnace?

7/27/2022 (Permalink)

When is it gone? When do you need to replace your water affected furnace?

The recent heavy rains in both our area and areas in southern Illinois, have affected many homes and businesses.  Amongst the other problems that this can cause, your furnace operation and safety to be compromised.

Making your furnace safe can be as simple as cleaning, and disinfecting the furnace.  In more extreme circumstances you may have to replace the entire furnace system.  The only way to be sure is to have a qualified licensed heating company perform a safety and efficiency inspection once proper water mitigation is complete.

Your furnace may be operating after the flooding waters recede, but be warned this does not mean it is safe to operate.  Your furnace contains many opportunities for bacteria to grow. If the furnace is not properly disinfected by a professional-problems will continually show up.  Safety controls may also have been affected by the flood waters, and excessive moisture.

The furnace components affected by the flood water will all have to be replaced.  These items can include gas valve, and all safety controls,  the air circulation components, and an ignition system.  The heat exchanger can also start to exhibit rusting, and will require replacement.  You should not attempt to operate the furnace without these items being inspected for safety.  Safety and health are the most important considerations after a furnace is flooded. Yes, it may be necessary to replace your furnace after it has been flooded.  The manufacturer's warranties will not apply to any of these items that need to be replaced.  In fact most manufacturers will deny all future warranty claims after a flooded furnace incident. However, it may be helpful to contact your home insurance or your home warranty company-you may find coverage
