Escape Plans

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

Are you? Are your, your family, and/or your business ready to escape if a fire happens?

Fire Season has started-one of the most important things for your home or business is to have an Evacuation Plan. These are many times, not thought of as a priority – however, they truly are the most important part of fire planning. An effective evacuation plan will keep everyone safe in a fire situation. Whether you are starting from scratch or looking to improve upon your existing evacuation procedures, here is a seven-step plan to help guide you through creating a fire evacuation plan that protects your home or business.

Steps you can take to improve your Fire Evacuation Plan

  • Imagine every scenario

When planning your evacuation, start with basic questions to explore all primary threats. Where could it break out? How or why would a fire start there? What if “x” happens-“x” being anything you can think of. Examples: what if you have to go out a window? What if happens while your sleeping?

While that list seems endless-possible scenarios are an important thing to recognize.

  • Establish roles and responsibilities

Make sure everyone knows what they are to do. This is more important in a business setting-at home, the job is to get out of the building. In a business, there could be a fire door to chemicals, handicapped employees that may need assistance, etc. This is why planning is essential to keep everyone safe.

  • Determine designated routes and nearest exits

A good evacuation plan for you will always include primary and secondary escape routes. Doesn’t matter if it is a large office building or a 2-bedroom home-dual escape plans are essential and could make a difference when getting out safely.

  • Practice and meet

You will want to make sure these routes are practiced and that there is always a designated meeting spot. This is required to determine that all family members and/or employees have made it out of the building. Practicing these escape plans will keep those from panicking if the emergency should ever happen. Knowing what to do helps the safety of all involved.
